Turn heads and rock the crags and gym with the bold new Rockstar!Evolv Women's Rockstar Pink Climbing Shoe,Pink,9 M US Review
I first starting climbing indoors last November and am now working on 5.11's. The Rockstars were definitely an upgrade from the crappy rental shoes, partly because I didn't know any better back then. However, after a couple months of climbing regularly (3x a week), some faults began to emerge:1.) The Rockstars STRETCH LIKE CRAZY. I wear 7 in street shoes and after reading reviews ordered the Rockstars in 7.5 and 8. I was sorely tempted to keep the 8's because they were initially more comfortable, but the gym staff convinced me to keep the smaller size even though they cramped my toes.
I now regret not purchasing them in 7 (or even 6.5), as I've had to resort to wearing (*gasp*) socks with the 7.5's to fill the gaps. I can't tell you how many times I've felt like the shoes were about to slip off during a heel hook, or how precarious some of my edging has been because there was so much room in the toe box.
So for those of you hesitant about sizing: SIZE DOWN. Yes, it'll hurt initially, but you'll be happier later as you progress and climb harder.
2.) The Ecotrax rubber is not sticky compared to the Vibram rubber found on La Sportivas/Scarpas or even the C4/Stealth on the 5.10's. Smearing is a pain; I basically just slip off the smooth gym walls.
3.) Evolvs stink. Seriously, I've resorted to sticking dryer sheets in mine to defuse the odor. I think it's because these shoes are synthetic.
Verdict: I'm sad that I can't use them now, even for warm-ups, laps, or generally easy climbs because they've stretched out so much. I think these are decent beginner shoes as long as they are fitted correctly, but expect to outgrow them very quickly. Perhaps consider purchasing La Sportiva's Nagos or Mythos as more versatile, long-lasting shoes.
FYI, I'm currently wearing La Sportiva Miuras (women's lace-up version, in size 36.5) and love the aggressive, tight fit and the stickier rubber.
